The rice toss is a symbolic wish to the just-married couple for a life of prosperity and fruitfulness, which to the ancients meant many children. As a blessing, guests shower the couple with rice as they exit the ceremony. An urban legend that keeps cropping up, is that you shouldn’t throw rice because birds will eat it, the rice will immediately swell and, if there is enough rice, it will kill the bird. The facts: This isn’t true.
